An adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s only novel to top the New York Times bestseller’s list, Across the River and Into the Trees revolves around a complicated protagonist – a grizzled American Army officer (played by Liev Schreiber) and renowned hero of both World Wars stationed in Italy. A sombre, solitary weekend away to Venice becomes intriguingly complicated when Colonel Cantwell meets an arresting young woman named Renata. Beautifully shot, the film is conversational and thoughtful. This is a warm and haunting movie that adds its own spin to one of Hemingway’s most critically underappreciated works.
