The year is 1944. The remote Italian village of Vermiglio is a place of timeless rhythms and rituals and is a world away from the war consuming the rest of Europe. The arrival of Pietro, a soldier from Sicily, disrupts the dynamics of the local schoolmaster’s large family. Lucia, the oldest daughter, is drawn to the stranger, and a tentative romance blossoms into marriage. But their union sets in motion a string of devastating consequences.
