The Canadian documentary Geographies of Solitude won three awards at the last Berlin Film Festival, as well as best Canadian film at Hot Docs and prizes at several other festivals. It marks an auspicious feature debut from filmmaker Jacquelyn Mills who shot in 16 mm, with grainy images and sounds. The film is an immersion into the rich landscapes of Sable Island, Nova Scotia, and the life of Zoe Lucas, a naturalist and environmentalist who has lived over 40 years on this remote strip of sand and has become devoted to chronicling the island’s changes.
