Emily imagines Emily Brontë’s own Gothic story that inspired her seminal novel, “Wuthering Heights.” Haunted by the death of her mother, Emily struggles within the confines of her family life and yearns for artistic and personal freedom, and so begins a journey to writing her masterpiece as a means of coming to terms with, and surmounting, the two great loves of her life. First is her brother Branwell, a witty and artistically inclined young man frittering away what minor talent he has with dissolute behaviour. And then there is William Weightman with whom Emily shares a passionate affair. Frances O’Connor’s debut as a writer and director has been met with impressive critical acclaim.
